Gov.
Sanford Unveils MAP Commission
GROUP TO FOCUS ON MANAGEMENT, ACCOUNTABILITY
AND PERFORMANCE IN GOVERNMENT
Columbia,
S.C. - Tuesday, June 10, 2003 - 11:00 a.m. - Governor Mark Sanford
today announced the formation of a new commission to study the
way government does business in an effort to save taxpayer money,
increase accountability, improve service, consolidate functions,
return jobs to the private sector and help make South Carolina
more competitive in a global economy. The Governor's Commission
on Management, Accountability and Performance (MAP) will hold
its first meeting today under the leadership of Ken Wingate, former
gubernatorial candidate and member of Gov. Sanford's Transition
Team.
"Restructuring
ultimately boils down to thinking outside the box and finding
ways for government to provide better service and better value
to the taxpayer," Gov. Sanford said. "This commission
is all about breaking down the current structure, checking out
the moving parts and coming up with a plan for putting the engine
back together so it runs smoother and more efficiently. Beyond
asking 'how does this work,' I'm particularly interested in this
commission asking 'why does it work that way,' and ultimately,
'is there a better way of getting the job done.' That's a hundred
and eighty degree change from the way government usually approaches
things - but it's one of the key changes we've got to make in
South Carolina if we want to move forward as a state."
The
Governor's Commission on Management, Accountability and Performance
consists of the following individuals (please
see brief biographies below): Ken B. Wingate (Chairman),
Lt. Gov. André Bauer, (Ex officio), Comptroller General
Richard Eckstrom (Ex officio), Carl O. Falk, Jennie M. Johnson,
Floyd L. Keels, John H. Lumpkin, Jr., Harry M. Miller, John W.
Pettigrew, Jr., Barbara Rackes, Dr. Eddie M. Robinson, Stewart
H. Rodman, Samuel J. Tenenbaum and William M. Webster, IV.
"Our
vision is to free South Carolina to go from good to great,"
said Chairman Ken Wingate. "That means looking at the current
structure and operations of how we do things from an entirely
different, performance-based perspective. South Carolina is blessed
with remarkable assets, but we must find ways for government to
do more - and do it for less. This distinguished group of business
executives will bring to the table an infusion of energy and experience
to find ways to make that happen."
